Become a Mass Volunteer

“Every liturgical celebration, because it is an action of Christ the priest and of his Body which is the Church, is a sacred action surpassing all others. No other action of the Church can equal its efficacy by the same title and to the same degree” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #278).

Do you have a heart for ministry? Would you like to hold the Blessed Sacrament in the palm of your hand? Are you a sociable person? Or do you like to get your hands dirty for the Lord? If you answered yes, then you might be a good fit for volunteering with one of our many Mass and liturgy volunteer groups. Below is a list of ministries you can join to get involved!

Get Involved: Liturgical Ministries at St. John Neumann

Altar Servers

For those who like to stay active during Mass, learn to serve in various types of liturgies, make friends, and to encourage religious and priestly vocations. This ministry is for boys and girls who have made their First Communion, are entering/in the Fourth Grade, up to 18 years old as a senior in high school, and for those serving at the parish, registered parishioners.  Click here for more information about the ministry and to sign-up for a training.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

The Eucharist is a central tenant of our faith and it provides grace and spiritual food for the spiritual life. Many of our parishioners hunger for our Lord. Our ministers see the importance of serving, appreciate taking part in this sacred role, and enjoy serving alongside fellow ministers. Won’t you join us in this important ministry?

We are in need of ministers at all Mass times. Training is open to those who are 16 years old, confirmed, and a registered parishioner. Sainthood is not required. 🙂

If you are interested please contact the Parish Office to learn more or direct any questions to liturgy@sjnaustin.org

Lector- Suzanne Davis Majors

Lectors

Our lectors faithfully proclaim the Word on a regular schedule at Mass. At this time, we are not accepting newcomers and so we have a waiting list of interested individuals. We do welcome your questions and feedback which can be sent to liturgy@sjnaustin.org

Usher Offertory Collection

Ushers

Usher volunteers guide people to their seats, pass out worship aids and bulletins, assist with the offertory collections, guide people during Communion, and more. Personal trainings are available anytime. The minimum age for ushers is 15 years old and you must be a registered parishioner. If you are interested in joining, contact the parish at liturgy@sjnaustin.org or Doug Murrell, Head Usher, at dmurrell@austin.rr.com or 512-263-2451.

Greeters- Rick Ebert & Martin Ochs

Greeters

This apostolate is for those who are sociable, friendly people. They greet parishioners and visitors as they arrive to make them feel welcome. They guide newcomers. They also assist the elderly and those who need assistance at the 9:00 and 11:30 a.m. Mass. We are greatly in need of more Greeters to serve at all of our Masses and to help reach our goal of providing a welcoming environment for all visitors. You must be 15 years old and a registered parishioner. They are led by our Greeter Coordinator Rick Ebert (rick@alpsmgmt.com). Personal trainings are available anytime. If you are interested contact liturgy@sjnaustin.org

Sacristan- Jody Tusa

Sacristans

Our Sacristans work behind the scenes preparing our sacred vessels and other items in preparation for Mass. They serve by special invitation and are primarily drawn from among our experienced Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. If you are a current EMHC and think you are interested in joining or have been a Sacristan at another parish, please contact liturgy@sjnaustin.org.

Join the Altar Society Pic

Altar Society

Are you ok with getting a bit dirty and working with your hands? Are you free during the day for 30 min. to an hour? Our Altar Society volunteers help clean our holy water fonts, fill our candles with oil, straighten our pamphlets in the Pamphlet stands, etc. This might be good for people with flexible schedules or stay-at-home moms and dads. For more information and to volunteer, contact liturgy@sjnaustin.org.

Flowers

Flower Guild

This is for all those people with green thumbs and a sense of style. Our Flower Guilds prepares our flower arrangements every weekend. Sometimes we have special or extra volunteers help us decorate for special events such as for Christmas (poinsettias) and Holy Thursday’s place of Reposition using flowers and other décor. To volunteer, contact our Flower Guild Coordinator Dolores “Dee” McKenzie at doloresmckenzie@austin.rr.com or liturgy@sjnaustin.org.

Serve once a month or as often as you like. Families can easily be scheduled to serve together. At the trainings we’ll cover all the things you need to know for serving. For questions or more information, please contact the Parish Office.
