It is essential that every parish catechetical program takes into consideration the role of parents as primary educators of their children and involve parents in the catechetical formation of their children. Parents form foundational values and beliefs from the earliest beginnings of life. They are "the most influential agents of catechesis for their children" and "catechize primarily by the witness of their Christian lives and by their love for the faith" (NDC, p. 234). Adult faith formation programs for the whole community are some ways in which the Church can assist parents and families in their faith journey. As such, St. John Neumann encourages parents to actively participate in their child's Faith Formation through volunteering as a class catechist, substitute or aid, and/or continuing their own Faith Formation.
